LUTHER (A02439407)

Since Luther arrived at his foster home from an aspiring animal hoarder in Pennsylvania, he has been the perfect gentleman! He gets along wonderfully with his older Basset brother and feline sister -- he loves to sniff her and let her rub against him and only occasionally pretends to chase her for a few seconds when he first sees her. He's not crazy about young puppies jumping all over him though he'll tolerate it for a little bit. He loooooves to meet people, and his tail goes into full wag mode when a new person comes by. He is the same with other dogs -- definitely on the submissive side.

Luther is an amazing couch potato who lives for a comfy spot and belly rubs -- until he thinks there's a chance of a walk. Then he's right at the door, looking longingly at you and the leash. He is the fastest Basset walker in the world -- none of this stop, sniff, stop, sniff, sniff, walk a little, repeat. He strolls right along at a good clip, only occasionally taking time for a good stop 'n' sniff. He walks very nicely on a lead -- no pulling! He is fine riding in the car.

Luther is a very well-mannered 6-year-old (approximate age): He howls only if he thinks NOBODY is home with him (not even his canine brother), or if the other Basset is alerting people to someone at the door, or if you are taking too long to make his dinner (this happened only twice). He is quiet 95% of the time. Luther does not like to be completely alone; he would be best in a home with either another dog(s) or where there's nearly always a person around. He is an aspiring counter cruiser, but one reprimand puts him off the scent. Luther is a finicky eater. He prefers a mix of wet and dry. He loves a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on his food, or some plain fat-free yogurt mixed in. He loves tuna and chicken anything, but is not big on other meat flavors. He's also very picky about treats, which hopefully will help keep his weight down!

He does find the furniture the most comfy place in the house (well, he's a smart guy!) and has to be reminded to stay "off!" He usually sleeps near his doggie brother or in the dog bed on his mom's side of the bed, but even if his doggie brother goes up to the bedroom in the middle of the night, he's usually content to stay where he is and will sleep through the night without having to go out. Luther is about 95% housebroken and is working everyday towards being 100%. Part of the issue is that he is such a quiet boy; he rarely barks if he needs to go out. He'll go over to the door, but if no one is around, he doesn't realize he should bark (the foster has been trying to train him to ring a bell). He also loooves to nap, and think he probably holds it a little too long sometimes, so when he has to go, he REALLY has to go! Careful monitoring of him has helped cut down on the accidents -- including making him get up (all it takes is a touch and he's up!) and go pee in the middle of one of his many naps or before everyone goes to bed.

Luther's skin and coat are beautiful, his ears are in very good condition, and his eyes are perfect. He doesn't mind being handled while eating or napping, and has very good grooming habits. He will let you wipe his eyes and ears; he's a little hesitant about getting his nails trimmed, but it can be done with two people and gentle handling. He is in good shape, although he needs to lose 3 or so pounds (it's hard to figure out how such a picky eater actually ended up "full-figured"). He has a wee bit of hesitancy with stairs, but he's doing very well at his foster home, where he's got to manage at least some stairs to go out to do his business or if he wants to sleep in the same room as mom! Mostly, he just wants the opportunity to roll over so people can give him a good belly rub! Even though he's clearly very attached to his people, he does not have the need to follow from room to room; as long as he knows his people are in the house, he's fine and will nap for hours.

It's amazing to think that Luther doesn't have a forever home; he's SUCH a lovable, well-behaved, low-maintenance and undemanding basset!! Come meet him and he'll steal your heart, guaranteed. All he wants in return is your love, a few walks and the occasional belly rub.

Adoption fee on Luther is: $175.

**The age of many BROOD dogs is unknown, as very few come with official records. The estimate on the dog's age is usually the initial estimate given by the receiving shelter, which may be different from that given at the time of initial checkup. Different veterinarians may also give different ages, and those different opinions are sometimes reflected on the records.

***BROOD's adoption fees are determined based on age of the dog. Individual adoption fees are shown with each dog's listing.
